Lawrence W. Worch
February 25, 1926 - May 30, 2019

Lawrence William Worch, of Medford, OR, died at home, on Thursday, May 30, 2019 after a long illness. Larry was born February 1926, in San Diego, CA to Lawrence P. and Sadie E. (Sarah Elizabeth Murray) Worch.
After attending schools in the San Diego area, he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. He was going to attend flight school, but with the situation improving in Europe, they didn’t need him in that specialty, so he attended Radio School instead. He was discharged in 1946. Four years later, in 1950, Larry was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Japan with the 452 Bomb Wing, in what was then the Air Force; he was honorably discharged in August 1951.
After WWII, Larry worked for the San Diego Fire Department from 1948 to 1950. After returning from Korea, he was with the Los Angeles County Fire Dept. through 1953. Also during this time, he met and married his better half, JoAnn (Johanna) Ruth Sanders, in April 1952.
He attended USC, graduating in 1955 from the School of Commerce. He sold insurance for 1 year, then decided to teach school. From 1956 to 1958 he taught 5th grade in the Redondo Beach-Torrance Unified School District. He joined the County of Los Angeles, Bureau of Investigation in 1959 and worked there until his retirement in 1981. During his work with the bureau, Larry was active in the Shirhan Shirhan investigation (1969) as well as the Manson Family case (1971).
Growing up in San Diego, he loved the ocean, often camping with his family along the California coast at Refugio Beach. He would free dive off of Dana Point, and Palos Verde, bringing home abalone, lobster and octopi.
Larry was a big car guy. He bought his first car, a Model T Ford, for 50 cents. In the 1960’s he acquired a VW Bug, imported directly from Germany. At the time of his death, he owned a 1930 Model A Ford, a 1976 MG, a 1980 Camaro, several trucks and a couple of Cadillacs.
He was a member of the Model A Ford Club of America, as well as other sports car clubs in the Medford area. He served with the Civil Air Patrol, Oregon Wing and in 1996, he was elected President of the Rogue Valley Council of the Navy League.
He was preceded in death by his mother (1969), his father (1971), his step-mother, Clara Worch (1985) and two cousins, Warren Reese (1995) and Gerald Reese (2002). His wife JoAnn died in June 2000.
He is survived by his children, son, Bradley Worch (Amber); daughter, Linda Worch Reichert (James); son, Jeffrey Worch; his grandchildren, Maryann Worch, Jacob Worch, Joseph Worch, Jamie Worch, Sarah Reichert, Allison Uhls (Arthur), Cynthia Reichert, Bryan Worch, Jeremy Worch; great-grandchildren, Jasmine Worch, Alyssa Worch, Christopher Worch; and many other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 12, 2019 at 10am at Lodi Memorial Park, 5750 E. Pine St, in Lodi, CA. There will be a meal following. All are welcome to attend.
