Obituary for Thomas F. Basgen

Thomas F. Basgen passed away December 18, 2017 after 75 years. For the past 18 months, Tom had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. This final stage of his life was comfortable and peaceful, surrounded by family I his home in Medford, Oregon.
Tom was born December 5, 1942 in Batesville, Arkansas to Donald H. Basgen and Evelyn I. Nelson. Tom graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in business and engineering. While in college, Tom joined the Army ROTC. After college, Tom made the most important decision of his life and married his college sweetheart, Linda M. Morlan.
After marriage, Tom served as an officer in the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was awarded the Bronze Star. After his return, Linda raised four rambunctious boys while Tom went to work for the construction firm Chicago Bridge and Iron. For the next 30 years the family lived all across the United States, culminating in moves to Thailand, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates where Tom became President of Asia-Pacific for CBI. In retirement, Tom became owner of the business his father-in-law created: the Medford Builders Exchange. Tom would sometimes explain: “If you are waiting on me, you are backing up.”
Tom had a gift for moral clarity, seeking truth as sure as a compass finds north. His insistence on honesty and accountability was absolute, and he refused to cut corners for any reason – some might even say he was prone to stubbornness. For his final 10 years, Tom invested his energy and focus as a board member and volunteer for CASA, an organization that protects abused and neglected children. Tom will also be remembered for his love of family and undying dedication to our country and its veterans.
Tom is survived by his wife, Linda; his four children, Mike, Steve, Todd, and Brian; his three daughters-in-law, Carrie, Nhi-Nhi, and Melinda; his three sisters, Betsy Mason, Cathy Kamenoff, and Barbara Yahne; seven beautiful grandchildren, Kyle, Savior, Matthew, Lilly, Maya, Maxwell, and Nia; as well as 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Prozinski.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford, reception to follow. Burial will be at 1 p.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to CASA (
