Obituary for Mary Ellen Christian

Mary Ellen Christian, 80, went to be with the Lord on January 26, 2018, in Gold Hill, Oregon. Mary Ellen was born on May 8, 1937 to Owen and Esther McCarty in Stevenson, Washington.
While she was growing up, her family moved many times, following the heavy and industrial construction jobs her father was employed by in Oregon and Washington. She graduated from Springfield High in 1954.
Mary Ellen married Curt Christian on August 31, 1956. She graduated from University of Oregon in 1967 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught at Pleasant Valley School, near Portland, Ore., for five years.
She taught at Patrick Elementary School and Hanby Middle School in Gold Hill, Ore., for 28 years. Mary Ellen retired from teaching in 2002.
She spent 30 years volunteering at Fir Point Bible Camp during the summer break, registering kids, overseeing staff, and food service operations. Her ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds was legendary.
Mary Ellen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Curt Christian; brother, Owen (Bill) McCarty (Lolita); three children, Lou Christian (Tina) of Tualatin, Ore., Lee Christian (Brenda) of Hillsboro, Ore., and Lisa Hotovec of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Edythe McCarty; and grandson, Josiah Hotovec.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Hanby Middle School, where she served as the librarian for many years. Hanby is located at: 806 6th Ave. Gold Hill, Oregon.
