Obituary for Alfred W. Buck

Alfred Buck, 100, of Eagle Point, passed away peacefully after a short illness. He was born in Pennsylvania and lived the past 16 years in the Rogue Valley.
Al was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in geography. A World War II Army veteran, he was a Master Sergeant in the 29th Infantry Division, 227th Field Artillery Battalion and fought in the Normandy campaign. He was also a career federal public servant who worked for the Department of the Interior for most of his career. He was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Wild and Scenic Rivers program and had a life-long passion for protecting open space. Whether hunting in the fields and forests or fishing in the lakes and rivers, he passed on his love of the outdoors to all around him. When he came to the Rogue Valley, he adopted the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy and they him where he volunteered his vast knowledge of outdoor conservation.
He is survived by hie sister, Jimmy; son, Jim; daughter-in-law, Jean; grandchildren, Allison, Rachel, and Russell; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Helen and his eldest son, Tom.
His 100th birthday celebration drew family and friends from far and wide and he spoke fondly of that day as a celebration of his life. A future gathering of family and friends will be scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy.
